When it comes to living a fulfilling and healthy life, it’s important to understand the difference between health and wellness.

While many people use these terms interchangeably, they are actually two distinct concepts with unique meanings.

In this article, we’ll explore the difference between health (ii) and wellness, the impact of wellness on overall health, and the benefits of creating a culture of wellness in the workplace (iii).

What is Health?

Health refers to a state where the physical body is free from disease or illness. '

It is a state of being in which a person’s body is functioning properly and optimally. Achieving good health requires proper nutrition, exercise, rest, and a healthy lifestyle (iv).

While health is a critical component of overall wellness, it is not the only factor to consider. In fact, wellness encompasses much more than just physical health.

What is Wellness?

Wellness is an overall balance of a person’s physical, social, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, environmental and occupational well-being. It is an active process that requires a person to make conscious choices and take actions that promote health and well-being.

Wellness is not just the absence of illness or disease. It is a state of being in which a person is actively striving for balance in their life. This involves making choices that promote physical health, emotional well-being, social connections, intellectual growth, and spiritual fulfillment (v)

The Importance of Wellness for Overall Health

While health is important, it is not the only factor that contributes to overall well-being. In fact, wellness has a direct influence on a person’s overall health.

When a person is actively striving for balance in their life, they are more likely to make healthy choices that promote physical health and emotional well-being. They are also more likely to have strong socialconnections (vi), engage in intellectual pursuits (vii), and experience spiritual fulfillment.

On the other hand, when a person neglects their overall well-being, it can have a negative impact on their physical health. For example, chronic stress and anxiety can lead to a variety of physical health problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes.

Creating a Culture of Wellness in the Workplace

The benefits of wellness extend beyond individual health and well-being.

Creating a worksite culture of health and wellness can boost and maintain employee morale (viii), improve the lives of employees, and help drive an organization’s overall success.

A culture of wellness involves promoting healthy behaviors and practices throughout the workplace. This can include providing healthy food options, encouraging physical activity, offering mental health resources, and promoting work-life balance (ix).

By creating a culture of wellness, employers can not only improve employee health and happiness but also increase productivity, reduceabsenteeism (x), and improve the organization’s bottom line.

Conclusion

In summary, the terms health and wellness may be used interchangeably, but they have distinct meanings.

Health refers to a state where the physical body is free from disease or illness, while wellness is an overall balance of a person’s physical, social, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, environmental and occupational well-being.

Wellness has a direct influence on overall health and is achieved when someone strives for balance in their life by constantly making choices to further their health and fulfillment.

By creating a culture of wellness in the workplace, employers can improve employee health and happiness, increase productivity, reduce absenteeism, and improve the organization’s bottom line.

So, if you want to live a truly healthy and fulfilling life, it’s important to prioritize wellness and make conscious choices to promote overall well-being.
